The decision comes days after Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress to answer questions surrounding the recent Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal.
The London-based dating mining firm, which was hired by the Trump campaign in 2016, improperly obtained and used Facebook data to target potential voters.
But as of today (April 17), Bumble will allow its users to register and log in without sharing information with the social media network.
Instead, people can log into the app with their phone number – although they can still log in via their Facebook account if they choose to do so.
Ok Cupid, for example, launched in January 2004 – 16 days before Facebook opened its doors and some two years before it was open to those without an academic address.
Tinder, by contrast, first emerged five years ago, by which time everyone already had a Facebook account.
For its part, Facebook was able to gather insights into the behavior of Bumble’s users and the mobile app economy.
In addition, the company also recently revealed that “malicious actors” were able to use search tools to discover the identities and collect information on most of its two billion users worldwide.
First-time Bumble users had been required to share their Facebook profile with the app, which then imported their name, age, photos, and school or occupation in order to build a profile.
Perhaps more importantly, Tinder’s popularity triggered a sea change in attitudes to online dating in general – it was no longer something to be embarrassed about, and hidden away behind cryptic usernames. But – and it’s a big but – this theory falls down when you get to Bumble, which is only a year older than Tinder.
And that’s what makes me think there is something in these stats, incomplete as they are.
